Prof. Carme Torras (Coordinator)

Prof. Torras is Research Professor at the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC), and Head of the Perception and Manipulation Group at IRI. She received M.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Barcelona and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). Prof. Torras has published five books and more than two hundred papers on robot kinematics, computer vision, machine learning and geometric reasoning. She has led 25 research projects, among which 10 European ones, has supervised 14 Ph.D. theses, has carried out editorial tasks for 9 journals. She is currently Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics. Prof. Torras is ECCAI Fellow (2007), member of Academia Europaea (2010), member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (2013), and Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics.

Dr Aleksandar Jevtić

Dr Jevtić joined the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI) in October 2014 as a Beatriu de Pinós postdoctoral researcher. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science in the field of swarm intelligence and swarm robotics. Before joining the IRI, he was a research engineer at Robosoft, France, as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow in the EU FP7 INTRO Initial Training Network, and a visiting researcher at the ESTIA institute, France. His research interests include human-robot interaction, computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Dr Guillem Alenyà

Dr Alenyà holds a tenured position at Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC). He received a PhD degree (Doctor Europeus) from UPC in 2007 with the support of a Marie-Curie scholarship with a work on robot navigation using active contours. He has been visitor at KIT-Karlsruhe (2007) and INRIA-Grenoble (2008). He has participated in more than 15 scientific projects and lead 5 technology-transfer projects involving image understanding, next-best-view, machine learning and execution task planning.

Dr Francesc Moreno-Noguer

Dr Moreno-Noguer received the MSc degrees in industrial engineering and electronics from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Universitat de Barcelona in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and the PhD degree from UPC in 2005. From 2006 to 2008, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the computer vision departments of Columbia University and the Ecole Polytecnique Fédérale de Lausanne. In 2009, he joined the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial in Barcelona as an associate researcher of the Spanish Scientific Research Council. His research interests include retrieving rigid and nonrigid shape, motion, and camera pose from single images and video sequences. He received UPC’s Doctoral Dissertation Extraordinary Award for his work.

Mr Gerard Canal

Mr Canal is a PhD student who received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2013. He obtained his Master degree in Artificial Intelligence at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), in 2015. His main research interests include the development of novel assistive technologies based on social robotics involving computer vision.




Dr Sanja Dogramadzi

Dr Dogramadzi is an Associate Professor in Robotics in the BRL. She has a degree in Mechanical and Control Engineering and a PhD in medical robotics. She has expertise in soft robotics, safety, fault detection and medical robots for minimally invasive procedures and rehabilitation. She is an active member of the BSI/ISO standardisation initiative for non-industrial robots. She chairs UK BSI advisory group for Robots for Personal Care. Dr. Dogramadzi will be Principal Investigator for BRL-UWE and leading the work package on Safety.

Dr Praminda Caleb-Solly

Dr Caleb-Solly holds degrees in Electronic Systems Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering and a PhD in Interactive Evolutionary Computation. She is theme leader for Assisted Living in the Bristol Robotics Lab, Associate Professor in Independent Living Systems and Head of Electronics and Computer Systems at Designability (Bath Institute of Medical Engineering). Her current research is in Human-Robot Interaction and Assistive Technologies and Smart Sensors. She will be leading the work package on Human Factors and Interface Design.

Prof. Tony Pipe

Prof. Pipe is Deputy Director of the BRL and Professor of Robotics & Autonomous Systems. He has 15 years of research experience in advanced robotics, machine learning and adaptive behaviour applied to intelligent & distributed control/monitoring systems, and in embedding complex algorithms (e.g. biologically-plausible spiking neural networks) in reprogrammable digital VLSI.

Dr Alexander Lenz

Dr Lenz is a Senior Lecturer for Robotics and Electronics at BRL and is an experienced developer of embedded hardware and software. He was one of the key developers/researchers in the FP7 ICT project "CHRIS‟ and is leading EU-funded Myorobotics project.

Dr Greg Chance

Dr Chance joined the BRL in January 2016 as a research associate. He has been working in industry since obtaining his Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Bath, United Kingdom, in 2005. He has worked in areas of semiconductor and RF engineering, electronics design and fabrication, programming and test and measurement.




Dr Sylvain Calinon

Dr Calinon is a permanent researcher at the Idiap Research Institute, heading the Robot Learning & Interaction Group. He is also a Lecturer at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and an External Collaborator at the Italian Institute of Technology. His research interests cover robot learning and human-robot interaction.

Mr Emmanuel Pignat

Mr Pignat is a PhD student in RLI group at IDIAP, working on the robot learning part of I-DRESS project. His research interest is development of probabilistic models to encode multimodal sensory signals together with motor control signals.
